Plant them in soil with excellent drainage. Hens and chicks like full sun, but in areas with hot summers, partial shade can be beneficial in the afternoon. Water lightly, allowing the roots to dry out between waterings and you'll have great looking plants. Sempervivum will be hard working and low maintenance in your flower garden. They suffer from few diseases and continue growing year after year even when completely ignored.

Sempervivum plants propagate by producing offsets on stolons. They are monocarpic plants. This means that they flower, set seed, and then die. Hens and chicks will typically flower after a few years. Plants produced from seeds will not be true to the variety.
